The third day of the second Test match between West Indies and New Zealand which is being played in Hamilton was full of drama and it kept the Twitter abuzz. The day started with New Zealand wiping off the West Indies’ tail to bowl them out for 221 in the first innings to take a lead of 152 runs.

The hosts thereafter batted at a brisk pace in the second innings to set a 4th innings target for West Indies as soon as possible. It was although only the third day of the match and probably that sort of urgency was not needed, but because of a damp weather forecast for the next two days, the New Zealand camp went all guns blazing and two of the most experienced batsmen in the line-up, Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor, took the onus upon themselves.

While Williamson scored a half century, Taylor went on to achieve a three figure score which was his 17th in Test match cricket and which got him levelled to Martin Crowe and Williamson who are leading the chart in terms of scoring the maximum no. of Test centuries for the Black Caps.

Taylor’s hundred was the talking point on Twitter as the fans showered plaudits on the right-handed veteran for being a consistent performer for his country in the last decade or so. Some Twitterati remarked that Taylor is one of the most underrated batsmen in world cricket as he plays in tough conditions, but still manages to churn out big scores which is outstanding.

Meanwhile, Taylor’s hundred was followed by another drama as Ian Gould, who is a member of the ICC elite panel of umpires, made one of the most ridiculous mistakes as the third umpire when an lbw decision was referred to him towards the end of the New Zealand innings.

Gould was probably caught napping as he had no idea he was checking for an lbw, he thought it was a caught dismissal and after checking it on HotSpot which showed no mark on the bat, he sent it back on the field saying he had no conclusive evidence that the batsman had hit the ball and the decision of the on-field umpire should stay.

Everybody was confused with the way Gould went about that DRS call and there was chaos on the field for a couple of seconds before the veteran official finally realized his mistake and used the ball tracker to rule the batsman out leg before wicket. It was the weirdest decision review of all time.

The Twitterati were not happy at all with Gould there as they thought ICC should take action against him for performing his duties so irresponsibly. There were some hilarious jokes cracked on the English umpire as well who is fondly called The Gunner Gould in the cricketing circles for being a fan of the Arsenal Football Club.

Here are a some of the best tweets that emerged during the day:
