After they were humbled in the first ODI, the Pakistan cricket team came back strong in the second game. Although their recent form wasn’t as convincing, they have thoroughly dominated the opposition in this match. Shaheen Afridi with the ball and Fakhar Zaman with the bat were the chief engineers of this victory. The series is now levelled 1-1 with the decider that will be played on Sunday.
Ross Taylor pulls out another brilliant act with the bat
Just like in the first ODI, Kane Williamson won the toss and opted to bat first. However, things didn’t go as per the visitors plans this time around. George Worker crawled his way to 28 off 50 balls. The in-form Colin Munro and Kane Williamson got out for 13 and 1 runs respectively. Similar to the first game, the onus was on Ross Taylor and Tom Latham.
But, with Latham failing to deliver, Taylor was the lone-warrior in the middle. He fought his way to an unbeaten 86 off 120 balls with very little support from the other end. Henry Nicholls played a handy innings of 33 runs but that came off an unacceptable 63 deliveries. The side only managed to pile up 209 in 50 overs after losing 9 wickets. Shaheen Afridi picked up a brilliant four-wicket haul in the innings.
Fakhar Zaman misses out on a well-deserved century
The chase was pretty much a seamless one for the home team. However, the only downside for them was that their opener Imam-ul-Haq had to walk off the field after he was struck on the helmet. He was batting on 16 before a nasty bouncer from Lockie Ferguson hit his head and he seemed to be in extreme pain. But, then, his partner Fakhar Zaman played a great innings of run-a-ball 88 which put the side in a commanding position.
Babar Azam joined the party with 46 off 50 deliveries. Just a few runs before the victory, these two got out. But, Mohammad Hafeez played a calm innings using all his experience to get the side over the line despite losing the wickets of Shoaib Malik and Sarfraz Ahmed at the other end. Pakistan comfortably won the game by 6 wickets with more than nine overs to spare.
Twitterati was glad to see Shaheen Afridi do so well at the international stage. They also seemed to be content with this innings from Fakhar Zaman and hoped for him to carry the momentum forward. A few fans felt bad for Ross Taylor as his efforts went in vain.
Here is how Twitterati reacted:

Shaheen Afridi by far has been Pakistan’s best bowler in the two ODIs vs NZ taking 8 wickets. But didn’t get to bowl full 10 overs in both games. #PakvNZ
