The fourth match of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2020-21 witnessed the Perth Scorchers taking on Melbourne Renegades at the Bellerive Oval, Hobart. At the toss, the coin flipped in favor of Ashton Turner, who invited the Renegades to field. The skipper’s move vehemently backfired courtesy of the magnificence of Kane Richardson and Josh Lalor, who bagged three and two, respectively.

Scorchers were dented quickly as they were reduced to 19 for 3 by the end of the third over. While opener Josh Inglis (9 from 6) fell to Richardson on a short ball outside the off stump, as he tried to pull it only to give Howell a chance at mid-on, his partner Colin Munro failed to trouble the scorers after his stumps were disturbed by Josh Lalor.

The 39-run stand for the fourth wicket between Turner and Mitchell Marsh was the highest for the team. P Hatzoglou dismissed Marsh (17 from 18) LBW as he attempted to cut the spinner, to end up being deceived by the wrong’un. The Renegades ensured that they never allowed the opponents to find their feet in the middle, and though Aaron Hardie’s 33 and skipper Turner’s 24 gave the team some relief, there under par total of 130 would have taken a miraculous bowling effort to be defended.

Renegades’ strolling chase

On the contrary, their bowling unit looked pale and could not withstand in front of the Aussie duo of Shaun Marsh and skipper Aaron Finch. Chasing only a tad over run-a-ball, Finch and Marsh played sensibly, hitting the odd boundary while rotating the strike well amongst each other, and their 70-run opening stand ironed out the chase well.

Turner shuffled across his bowlers, although none proved effective until the 8th over of the Renegades’ response when Jhye Richardson allured Finch with some width that led him to commit a mistake. Mitchell Marsh managed to grab the catch somehow in the covers to give his team one moment to celebrate. The new man, Sam Harper, popped a simple return catch to leg-spinner, Fawad Ahmed, leaving his side 94 for 2.

Marsh, who reached his half-century in the 14th over, was joined by Riley Rossouw. With the target well within their reach, the Renegades invoked the Power Surge at the end of the 14th over. The Renegades leveled the scores in the 16th over, however, Marsh (62 from 47) failed to get his bat behind Richardson’s length ball before the ball broke his stumps. As if the dismissal was not anticlimatic enough, Richardson gave a wide to gift the victory to the opponents, who won by 7 wickets with a whopping 21 deliveries to spare.
