Southern Brave produced a near-perfect performance as they dominated Welsh Fire to cruise to an eight-wicket victory at Cardiff on Tuesday, (27 July) in the Hundred. Brave skipper Anya Shrubsole was as miserly with the ball as ever giving away just 16 runs, and help her team restrict Fire to just 110.

With the ball, the Fire bowlers just could not find a solution to tackle Smriti Mandhana as she blazed her way to an unbeaten 61 off just 39 balls to win the match for Brave with 16 balls remaining. It’s a no-brainer that the southpaw loves chasing targets and this time too Mandhana produced a master class in chasing.

Striking at over 150, the 24-year-old seemed to be in just one gear and was keen to make amends after her low score in her first outing. There was an impending threat of rain too, but the sun brightly shined, when Brave batters were at the crease.

That was all that Mandhana needed and after losing her two partners Danielle Wyatt and Sophia Dunkley too, she seemed to mix caution with aggression and dispatched the Fire bowlers to all parts of the ground. With two wins from two games, the Brave have made a perfect start to cricket’s latest invention the Hundred.

When quizzed Mandhana on the post-match presentation, the southpaw was quick to give credit to her bowlers for making the task easier for the batters. Shrubsole was well supported by Australia spinner Amanda-Jade-Wellington, who picked two wickets and so did Lauren Bell who chipped in with two wickets as well.

The Fire batters just could not get impetus in their innings as there was constant pressure from the Brave bowlers. Only Hayley Matthews looked convincing for them as she scored 33 runs and help Fire post 110. But there was less support for the all-rounder as the other batters could not contribute much.

With two losses from two completed games, Fire are languishing at the bottom of the points table. On the other hand, the Brave are looking solid with two convincing wins under their belt.
