Harmanpreet Kaur-led Supernovas locked horns with Velocity in the second match of the Women’s T20 Challenge 2022, hardly 16 hours after winning the opening game against the defending champions Trailblazers. Deepti Sharma’s debut game as a captain ended in a remarkable way as the Velocity beat the Supernovas by seven wickets.

The two-time champions Supernovas had a terrible start to the game as Velocity’s Kate Cross scalped two wickets in the powerplay. Skipper Deepti joined the party by picking her first wicket of the tournament as Supernovas were lowered to 18/3 in the fourth over. It was a nightmare for batters as they had to find their way back to the dugout after an amazing run in their first game.

Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and wicketkeeper batter Taniya Bhatia stitched a brilliant partnership in the middle and anchored the innings. The duo put up an 81-run stand, the highest for the 4th wicket in the history of the Women’s T20 Challenge. Confusion between the two midway into the game caused Bhatia’s runout, but Kaur stood strong and compiled a brilliant half-century score.

Kaur (71 off 51) hit seven fours and three sixes before being scalped by Radha Yadav. South African skipper and middle-order batter Sune Luus played a quick cameo role by hitting a 14-ball 20 runs and Supernovas ended scoring 150/5.

Velocity register the highest successful chase in the history of the tournament

Coming into the chase, Pooja Vastrakar gave her team an early breakthrough as she scalped Natthakan Chantham (1 off 4) in just the second over of the game. But Shafali Verma covered up for the early loss and wreaked havoc on the field. She punished the Supernovas bowlers and kept finding the gaps on regular basis to keep the asking rate in check. Yastika Bhatia (17 off 13) played a fine role in the top order but had to exit the game early as Velocity registered the highest powerplay score in the history of the tournament, scoring 60/1.

Verma scored 51 runs in 33 deliveries before being outclassed by all-rounder Deandra Dottin. The game slowed down a bit, but Laura Wolvaardt played some powerful shots and kept sending the ball towards the fence. Wolvaardt (51* off 35) brought up her half-century in style by smashing Dottin for a humungous six and remained unbeaten throughout as Velocity won the game by seven wickets to register the highest successful chase in the history of the tournament.
