Both Hobart Hurricanes and Sydney Thunder came into the match at Bellerive Oval in Hobart with two back to back victories. The encounter turned out to be a cliffhanger and went right down the wire. In the end, it was the Hurricanes who won their third match by seven wickets and continued with their unbeaten streak. Moreover, the team, captained by Matthew Wade, moved to the top of the points table.

Buttler rips apart Hurricanes

The Hurricanes won the toss and had no hesitation to field first on a wicket, which looked good for batting. Shane Watson looked good after scoring 20 runs from 14 balls, but speedster Riley Meredith trapped him plumb in front. Thereafter, the likes of Callum Ferguson and Englishman Joe Root chipped in with 15 and 17 respectively, however, both were unable to convert their starts.

Jason Sangha and Daniel Sams couldn’t contribute much. At the other end, Jos Buttler took the bowling to the cleaners with a knock of 89 from 54 balls with eight fours and four sixes. Chris Green came to bat in the 15th over and he turned up with a cameo of 26 from 14 deliveries. For the Hurricanes, James Faulkner and spinner Clive Rose picked up two wickets each. The Thunder racked up 193 for six.

Wade demolishes Thunder

The Hurricanes’ openers- Matthew Wade and D’Arcy Short- didn’t die wondering and wafted their willow right from the outset. Both stitched together a stand of 120 runs for the opening wicket in just 12.1 overs. Short smacked 58 runs from 39 balls with five fours and three sixes. The ominous partnership came to an end with Short’s run-out inflicted by Buttler and Nathan McAndrew.

However, Wade didn’t stop, going after the bowling. He scored 85 from 49 balls with seven fours and four sixes after which Sam Rainbird accounted for his wicket with the Hurricanes’ requiring 28 from 16 balls. In the same over, the left-armer castled Ben McDermott, who scored 22 from 18 balls. With 26 needed from the last two overs, George Bailey notched 23 from 10 balls to take his team home.
