Despite not being full-strength, West Indies would be happy with proceedings after the first day’s play in the Chattogram Test against Bangladesh. After losing the toss, the Caribbean team made sure that they didn’t allow the Tigers’ batters to run away from the word go. Rather, their bowlers made the hosts work for runs. In the end, the home team ended with 242 for five in their 90 overs.

Shadman comes to the party

Tamim Iqbal hit two fours to become the leading run-scorer for Bangladesh in Tests. Soon after, Kemar Roach castled him as the hosts lost an early wicket. Najmul Hossain Shanto failed to convert his starts in the ODIs, and the same was the story even in the whites. After scoring 25 in a 43-run stand with Shadman Islam, he fell prey to a run-out. Roach and Kyle Mayers combined to run him out.

Mominul Haque was patient early on, but he couldn’t hold on to his composure and perished to Jomel Warrican after scoring 26 runs. At the other end, Shadman looked determined as he brought out his fifty off 128 balls. However, to his dismay, he became Warrican’s second victim at a score of 59. With the hosts in a bit of trouble, Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim took charge.

Shakib, Liton hold the fort for Bangladesh

The duo put on 59 runs for the fifth wicket, but just when they seemed settled, Warrican chipped in with his third wicket. The left-arm spinner found the outside edge of Mushfiqur, who had gotten his eyes in, scoring 38 runs off 69 balls with six fours. Rahkeem Cornwall took a sharp catch in the slips, bending low down. Around 16 overs remained and West Indies would have looked for more wickets.

But then Shakib and Liton Das made sure that the home didn’t have more hiccups. Shakib was the more circumspect of the two, staying unbeaten on 39 runs off 92 balls with four fours. Liton, on the contrary, played his shots and remained not out on 34 off 58. The rub of the green also went in Liton’s favour after Nkrumah Bonner dropped a sharp chance close-in off Cornwall.
