Melbourne Renegades started this year’s Big Bash League (BBL) with two resounding victories. However, Tom Cooper and Co now have lost three matches in a row and are languishing in the bottom of the points table. Their latest defeat came against Adelaide Strikers by 32 runs at the Geelong Ground. The Strikers were hanging in the middle of the table and they have moved up to the second position.

Weatherald weaves magic

The Renegades won the toss and opted to bowl first, but Adelaide Strikers managed to rack up a substantial 158 in 20 overs. Wicketkeeper Alex Carey and Jake Weatherald put on a stand of 60 runs from 43 balls after which leg-break bowler Cameron Boyce nipped out Carey, who strained a bit with a knock of 16 runs at a strike-rate of 76.19. Skipper Colin Ingram and Matthew Short perished in quick succession.

At the other end, Weatherald looked in ominous touch and he went on to score 71 runs from 44 balls with six fours and three sixes. He succumbed to a run-out in the 15th over. Michael Neser and Rashid Khan churned out quick-fire knocks of 13 and 21 respectively to propel the Striker’s score. Jonathan Wells scored a run-a-ball 22. For the Renegades, Boyce was the most successful with two wickets.

The Renegades strained throughout their run-chase and were never in contention to win the match. Billy Stanlake picked up the first wicket in the form of Mackenzie Harvey. In the fourth over, Neser accounted for Sam Harper’s wicket. Captain Cooper hit a four and a six but became leg-spinner Liam O’Connor’s first victim. Thereafter, Rashid picked up the experienced campaigner in Cameron White.

In his next over, Liam ripped Mohammad Nabi’s poles apart and all of a sudden, the Renegades lost half their side with 115 runs from 67 balls. Part-timer Ingram picked up the dangerous Daniel Christian. Jack Wildermuth and Boyce put on 40 for the seventh wicket, but by then the required rate had escalated out of the Renegades’ radar. For the Strikers, O’Connor, Neser and Stanlake picked up two wickets each.
