August 2014. The last time the West Indies won an ODI series. It was against Bangladesh when the West Indies played some terrific cricket and clean swept the opposition. However, times have got quite turbulent since then. In the same year, the team pulled out midway during the tour of India. And after this blow, the side never could recover in the 50-over format. They might have just come close to winning an ODI series a couple of times.
But there wasn’t enough depth in the squad to take them through. Even earlier this year, they levelled the series against England 2-2 but couldn’t win it. And finally, after a long wait, the Kieron Pollard-led team defeated Afghanistan in first two games of the three-match ODI series. Nicholas Pooran made the difference between both the sides in the second ODI.
A combined effort from the West Indies players
After they were asked to bat first, West Indies got off to a steady start. The openers added 98 runs together before Shai Hope fell to Rashid Khan after scoring 43. Evin Lewis and Shimron Hetmyer made valuable contributions of 54 and 34 runs respectively. However, the West Indies were still not in a great position at this stage and needed to accelerate. That’s when Nicholas Pooran came into the picture with a fabulous knock. In the last 10 overs, he shifted gears and scored quickly. His 50-ball 67 helped his team get to 247/9 in 50 overs on a two-paced track.
Afghanistan didn’t respond really well in the chase. The team kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Their batsmen couldn’t make the best of the starts that they got leading to a massive disappointment. As Rashid Khan said after the game, this target was easy to chase had they applied themselves better. The best knock of the innings came from the willow of Najibullah who scored 56 runs. A couple of batsmen also got into their thirties but couldn’t make a significant contribution. The team was bowled out for 200 in 45.4 overs and lost the game by 47 runs.
Fans congratulated West Indies for this memorable series victory. They applauded Nicholas Pooran for his knock and also enjoyed the batting of Evin Lewis, Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer. For their three-wicket hauls, Sheldon Cottrell, Roston Chase and Hayden Walsh were cheered.

Not exactly a fan of Pollard, but brave leadership from the all rounder. He gave the inexperienced Walsh the ball and that too with some dew around. And he gets the wicket #AFGvWI
