India have thumped the arch-rivals Pakistan in the first semi-final of the ongoing Under-19 World Cup in South Africa. It was a dominating performance throughout from the boys in blue and kept the opposition under the lid. Yashasvi Jaiswal was the star of the day with the bat as he smashed an unbeaten authoritative century as India chased down 173 comfortably without even losing a single wicket and with more than 14 overs to spare.

Though it was not a big ask, it was important for the Indian colts to start well against a talented Pakistan bowling attack. And the duo of Jaiswal and Divyaansh Saxena just did the same. They took their time early on with no pressure of the required run-rate by milking the runs rotating the strike. However, as they got settled in the middle, some gorgeous shots came out especially off the Jaiswal’s bat who has been the flagbearer of India’s batting in the tournament.

Jaiswal never looked in any hurry but made sure that he punished bad deliveries not giving any chance to the opponent. Saxena struggled a bit after getting off to a decent start. But with a steady head in Yashasvi Jaiswal at the other end, kept him calm and the duo didn’t even let Pakistan get a single wicket in their defence of a paltry score.

After getting to his half-century, Jaiswal upped the ante taking on the spinners and pacers both and dished out some glorious drives and deft touched from his batting armoury. In the process, the supremely talented batsman also got to his century with a six and also won the game with the same shot as India completed the chase in the 36th over of the innings to storm into the final of the Under-19 World Cup. While Jaiswal remained unbeaten on 105, Saxena also played his part in the superb partnership scoring 59*.

India U19 pacers keep a lid on Pakistan batsmen

Earlier, Pakistan U19 skipper Rohail Nazir won an important toss and opted to bat first. But Muhammad Huraira who scored a half-century in the quarterfinal couldn’t repeat his heroics. Sushant Mishra snaffled him in the second over of the innings. However, Haider Ali showed his class and kept the scoreboard ticking. Fahad Munir also struggled to get going and bagged a 16-ball duck getting out to the leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi.

From here on though the skipper Nazir and Ali joined hands and rebuilt the innings. They waited patiently for the bad delivery and in between kept rotating the strike. The duo stitched 62 runs for the third wicket and at 96/2 in the 26th over, they were just looking to play their shots. But Haider Ali, while on 56, tried to cut a wide delivery and failed to keep it down as Yashasvi Jaiswal struck against the run of play.

Then came the infamous mix-up between the two batsmen which has become a trademark Pakistan run-out which led to Qasim Akram going back to the hut. Rohail Nazir was key for the team then and along with Mohammad Haris built the innings again. The latter took the attack to the Indian bowlers to score quickfire 21 runs.

But Divyaansh Saxena took a stunning catch in the deep to put a full stop to his enterprising innings and this is where the game turned on its head. From 146/4, Pakistan collapsed. While Kartik Tyagi unfurled his yorkers to send the stumps cartwheeling, Sushant Mishra bluffed the batsmen with his well-directed short balls. The sustained pressure from the bowlers led to Pakistan getting bowled out for just 172 runs despite Rohail Nazir’s fighting 62. For India, Mishra returned with the figures of 3/28 while Tyagi and Bishnoi picked a couple of wickets each.

The chase proved to be a cakewalk for India as Yashasvi Jaiswal and Divyaansh Saxena didn’t give an inch to the opposition taking the team to the final of the tournament.
