Sunil Chhetri was on the mark yet again as the Indian football team soared to greater heights following an impressive 3-0 win over Kenya in the recently concluded Intercontinental Cup. At the start of the tournament, India‘s charismatic 33-year old skipper had posted a video requesting and literally begging people to come and watch the Indian football team as they took the field in the Cooperage Ground in Mumbai.

For Chhetri personally, it was a milestone, something that saw him draw level with the invincible and irresistible Lionel Messi, something that one does not do every day. His brace saw him climb to 64 goals, which makes him the second-highest goal-getter in international football. In addition to this, he is only behind Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, something that will now certainly cement his place in footballing history.

In recent times, sports apart from cricket have been picking up such as Kabaddi and football. The latter, in particular, has taken the front seat as well, given the fact that the World Cup is on its way. This itself will send a wave of football resonants across the country.

Although facing international competition, the Indians were impressive in the tournament facing teams that have performed quite well in the past. In fact, New Zealand have been part of World Cup finals previously while Kenya boasts of players such as Victor Wanyama within their ranks. The Kiwis boast of players such as Winston Reid and Chris Wood both of whom ply their footballing trade in the English Premier League.

Thus, this would certainly be one of the Indian football team’s most impressive achievements in recent times and certainly a lot more would be expected of them in the near future.

Here is what the Twitterati faithful had to say
