Some saw it as a relief, others saw it as something leading to something even more serious in the bigger picture, but that’s the thing about AB de Villiers, uncertainty and speculation is part and parcel of his career. He has now stepped down as the captain of the South African ODI team, but he has made one thing clear in the video he posted announcing the decision- 100% commitment to the Proteas in every format of the game.

There was speculation about de Villiers’ Test career as he had not donned the white jersey since January 2016. It happened because an injury sidelined him for much of last year but a string of injuries continued to haunt him later as well. Eventually, resulting in him missing the series against New Zealand, Australia, and Sri Lanka. Later, he stated that he would be taking a sabbatical from the Test game with an eye on the 2019 World Cup but kept the management and the fans guessing over his future.

It also resulted in former South African cricketers saying a thing or two about him taking a final call and deciding on whether he wants to be above the game or otherwise, including people like Graeme Smith and Ashwell Prince.

Because Twitter has an opinion about anything and everything, it was natural to have the same about de Villiers’ insistence that he has never placed himself above the Team. Most of it was positive, so that’s a relief but of course, people still insisted on negativity.

The biggest highlight of this declaration from Mr. 360 is that Cricket South Africa would prefer to add two experienced campaigners and their biggest stars in the Saffers’ future campaigns, scheduled early next year which comes with de Villiers and Dale Steyn’s return.
