The game against Mumbai Indians (MI) was a crucial for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) as they had to win to stay in contention for the playoffs. They did manage to pull off a sensational victory as the bowlers finally came to the party and bowled well in the death overs to defend 35 off the last 3 overs. But there was a huge controversy in the first innings when Virat Kohli had edged the ball but nobody heard the nick. However, Twitterati is not at all pleased with the Indian skipper as he didn’t walk and is calling him a cheat after the incident.
The incident happened in the 14th over when the home side was batting with Kohli on strike. He tried to guide the ball towards the third man to take the single but it came in with the angle and beat him as Jasprit Bumrah went up in appeal only in hope. Nobody heard the nick but the replays showed that he had edged the ball and if Mumbai would’ve taken a review, they would’ve been able to see his back sooner. As it turned out, he was eventually dismissed in the 18th over by Hardik Pandya but not before scoring 32 runs.
Why didn’t Kohli walk?
Virat Kohli too didn’t react after edging the ball and behaved as if nothing had happened only to attract the ire of the fans. Many felt that it was completely against the spirit of the game and he should have walked off after edging instead of staying on the crease. Interestingly, there was no appeal from Mumbai team as well which surprised everyone.
Twitterati was extremely unhappy with him and slammed Kohli for his actions. While many called him a cheater for not leaving the field despite being out, few again compared him with Sachin believing that the little master wouldn’t have continued batting after edging the ball.
Here’s how Twitterati slammed at Kohli:
@msdhoni would have not even waited for Umpire’s decision instead he would have walked simply if there was an edge on bat. That is the difference between @imVkohli and @msdhoni #RCBvMI #Fairplay #CheaterVirat

Haha! Ter was a slight edge..but Rohit dint go for a review..Hardik did the same against RCB n last match ,VK went for a review on tat game but the third umpire gav not out even though Ter was a slight change n ultra edge graph…now,VK did the same ? vs MI ..karma s a boomerang

Perfect example why Sachin Tendulkar is a better sportsman than Virat Kohli. Kohli edges the ball but doesn't walk. Perfect example why Sachin Tendulkar is a better sportsman than Virat Kohli. Kohli edges the ball but doesn't walk. #RCBvMI

Now cheating has new name Smartness. @imVkohli is a #Cheat. Rohit had a fent edge. And immediately they reviewed . So no point walking out when a decision is pending for review. https://t.co/NpHegDPSJU

That was a big edge & @imVkohli knew it. That is the reason why people love @msdhoni. He proved so many times that it's a gentleman game. #IPL #RCBvMI

Very bad sportsman spirit from @imVkohli .He knew he was out during an outside edge and caught by the keeper but he did not even deny the upmires fake decision of not out.#RCBvMI

@imVkohli Being the captain of India and RCB, you got to walk when you edge the ball. That is what makes you different from others.#MIvsRCB #IPL2018
