Cricketer turned politician Imran Khan became the Prime Minister of Pakistan after his party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) emerged as the single largest party in  National Assembly elections. The party won 116 seats out of 270 seats which made it incapable of forming the government on its own. A coalition government will be formed in Pakistan and Imran Khan is reportedly set to take oath as the Prime Minister on August 11.

Khan’s party has extended an invitation to a few notable Indian celebrities to attend his swearing-in ceremony. These include Bollywood actor Aamir Khan, former cricketers Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar and cricketer turned politician Navjot Singh Sidhu.

Hope for the best

The Punjab minister hoped that Khan’s victory in the elections would improve the relations between India and Pakistan. He felt that it was a huge honour to be invited for the swearing-in ceremony and he would definitely attend it if permitted. Of course, it appears that the former cricketer hasn’t read Reham Khan‘s book about Imran’s supposed dalliances. Sidhu also added that Khan was a man of character and a pure soul.

“My personal opinion is that sportsmen break barriers. They unite people. I see a sportsman in great Imran Khan and I see someone who will always do good to mankind. I have great hopes that relations will improve. I believe this could be a new era, this could be a new dawn and this could usher in an era of hope,” Sidhu was quoted as saying by DNA.

Reham Khan, Imran Khan’s ex-wife had made some shocking revelations about the Prime Minister-in-waiting in her book. The revelations were ludicrous and had sparked controversy ahead of the elections. The opposition parties also questioned the authenticity of the results.

Sidhu’s comments certainly did not go well on the social media platform. It remains to be seen if the celebrities are permitted to attend the swearing-in ceremony. It is also believed that India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also be invited for the ceremony in Pakistan.

Here are the reactions to Sidhu’s comments:
