The relationship between intermittent controversies and Pakistan cricket has seemed to be an everlasting one. Back in 2011, the likes of Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Asif, and Salman Butt were slapped with hefty bans, but it’s now a thing of the past and the nation’s cricket has come a long way ever since. Nevertheless, in a recent development, Umar Akmal has claimed that he was approached by the bookies earlier.

During the Men in Green’s match versus arch-rivals India in the 2015 Cricket World Cup at the Adelaide Oval, he remarked that he was asked to play out a couple of dot balls in order for him to earn a whopping $200,000. He couldn’t contribute anything with the willow and perished for a four-ball duck to left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja.

More troubles for Akmal?

He also claimed to have even been approached before that incident but he mentioned to not have played into their hands. Meanwhile, he has been called by the Pakistan Cricket Board’s Anti Corruption Unit to get further insights into the wicketkeeper batsman’s claims.

“Umar had been asked to appear before the PCB ACU on June 27 but at Umar’s request and owing to his availability issues the interview was conducted today. The matter is now under consideration and PCB shall announce further details shortly,” a statement released by PCB said.

Meanwhile, this isn’t the first instance when Akmal has been at the center of a controversy. In 2016, prior of the national team’s tour of England, he was sidelined owing to disciplinary issues. He also had a horrendous stint for the Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League.

During the event, he was a recipient to backlash from Brendon McCullum, the skipper of the franchise. Akmal has played 16 Tests, 116 ODIs and T20Is for Pakistan. His last international match was versus Australia at the Adelaide Oval back in January 2017.
