Australia clinched the 1st Ashes Test match by 10 wickets but there is a worrying spot in the line-up as Usman Khawaja has failed to survive the spin threats at the Gabba. Khawaja played just one of Australia’s last six Tests in the subcontinent and spent most of his time warming the bench because of his poor record at playing spin. The top-order batsman was dismissed by Moeen Ali in Brisbane and didn’t get to bat in the second innings.

Khawaja has been dismissed by spinners on 17 occasions out of his 43 Test innings, and it took Moeen just two deliveries to end his knock of 11 runs. There is a possibility of him getting dropped after the impressive knock of 278 by Glenn Maxwell in the domestic competition. But Khawaja’s rich form in the domestic circuit over the last few months may get him in for the 2nd Test in Adelaide.

It doesn’t bother me too much: Khawaja

“Sometimes you just get out – it’s cricket, it’s always going to happen,” Khawaja told reporters in Adelaide on Wednesday (November 29). “It doesn’t really bother me too much. But I have a pretty simple game plan: watch the ball and hit it. I don’t think there’s anything too drastic I have to worry about,” he added.

Khawaja admitted that the Gabba wicket had a fair bit of spin which he didn’t expect much. “The Gabba was turning a fair bit, which was a bit weird for the Gabba,” he said. “The wicket was still pretty soft and we did the exact same thing to them with Lyno (Nathan Lyon).

The left-hander played a gem of a knock, the last time Australia played under lights against South Africa but it will be a challenge for him to counter the movement caused by the pink ball and that too against the experienced duo- James Anderson and Stuart Broad.
