Australian southpaw Usman Khawaja had reinjured his anterior cruciate ligament during the Test series against Pakistan which kept him out of action in the second innings of the 2nd Test. Khawaja had previously picked up a similar injury in 2014 and got it fixed, but the demons from the past are back haunting the 31-year-old.

As a part of the recovery, Khawaja has to now undergo a knee surgery having consulted his doctors in Australia. He hasn’t returned from the UAE as yet and is expected to arrive back home tomorrow. If he undergoes a surgery, he will need a good 6-8 weeks of rehabilitation which will keep him away from the Test series against India.

Khawaja is a very important part of the current Australian setup, especially after the loss of Steve Smith and David Warner. The Men in Yellow look pale and fragile already and his loss will further deplete their batting strength. Virat Kohli’s Indian side are on a high and for the first time since the dawn of Indian cricket, the visitors will enter as the favourites to win the Test series.

Fingers crossed for Khawaja: Peter Siddle

Fellow teammate Peter Siddle expressed his grief talking about the untimely injury to the top order batsman. The fast bowler revealed that no one in the team saw that injury coming and at this point in time, everyone in the side is just hoping for him to get back as soon as possible.

“Nah we didn’t see it, some of the guys might’ve but I didn’t, he hasn’t really said too much,” Siddle said as quoted by ESPN Cricinfo. He also added that the 31-year-old is a very optimistic person and wished him a speedy recovery.

“Disappointing for him but he’s getting a scan later tonight and they’ll send it to the people who need to have a look at it in the next day or so and we’ll find out more. At this stage that’s all we know. Just fingers crossed for him, hopefully, it comes back positive for him and he can get back out there,” he added.
