Vernon Philander hilariously runs himself out in Centurion Test

South Africa seemed to be cruising in the ongoing Centurion Test on the day one. It was a sudden comeback from the visiting Indian side in the final hour of play to even out the honors for the day. Team India inflicted two runouts in quick succession to get back in to the game. The love story of team India and runouts in Test cricket seems to be getting deeper. This included the dismissals of Hashim Amla and Vernon Philander.

While the runout of Hashim Amla was a case of tough and go with both batsmen trying to complete a quick single, Vernon Philander found himself at the wrong end of the jokes for his dismissal. It will not be wrong to quote that Philander ended up running himself out hilariously on the day.

The action perspired in the 83rd over of the match. The Indian bowlers were not having a great time with the ball. Call it their luck or the lack of support from the Centurion track, they were found helpless in their attempts to penetrate through the Proteas batting. Amidst this backdrop, Hardik Pandya, who had already inflicted a runout in the game, bowled the 83rd over.

Vernon Philander was the man on strike. He tried to move away from the strike and let Faf du Plessis take the strike for bulk of the action. Hardik Pandya dug one short to Philander. The batsman managed to fend it off somehow. He soon realized that he could scamper through to the other end and get off the strike. Without even having a look at his partner, Philander kept running in towards the non-striker end.

Faf du Plessis, who was already guilty of being involved in Hashim Amla’s runout, wanted to avoid another mishap. He kept shouting in negation to stop Vernon. But Philander had nothing dropping in his ears and both batsmen were seen standing at the same end. The difference being, Faf du Plessis in his crease, and Vernon found short of the crease.
