Last year runners-up of the Indian Premier League (IPL) Kolkata Knight riders named Indian middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer as their skipper for the upcoming 15th season. Iyer was KKR’s most expensive buy in the mega auction 2022 when he was bought for INR 12.25 Crores.

The 27-year-old takes over the reins from Eoin Morgan, who, even after leading the team to the final last year before losing to Chennai Super Kings in the final was out of the reckoning due to his failures with the bat.

“We are delighted firstly to have been able to successfully bid for Shreyas in the IPL auction and to have the opportunity for him to lead #TeamKKR,” Venky Mysore, CEO & MD of Knight Riders said in a statement. “He has impressed one and all as a quality batsman at the highest level and we are confident that he will excel as a leader of #TeamKKR.”

Iyer was the main force behind the resurgence of the Delhi Capitals

Shreyas Iyer was the main force behind the rebranded Delhi franchise’s success in the last few years. Iyer took over the captaincy from Gautam Gambhir midway in IPL 2018 and led the franchise to their first-ever playoffs in ten years in 2019. However, a shoulder injury in the home series against England ruled him out of IPL 2021.

Iyer returned for the second leg of the tournament in UAE but the management decided to stick to Rishabh Pant as their skipper. However, Iyer was not retained by the Delhi Capitals ahead of the 2022 mega auction which took everyone by surprise given how well he had done for the side in recent years.

The right-handed batter has a decent record in leading a side in the IPL. Overall, Iyer has led in 41 matches in the IPL, out of which he won 21, lost 18 and two ended in ties. “I am extremely honored to have gotten the opportunity to lead a prestigious team like KKR,” Iyer said.

“The IPL as a tournament brings the best players from different countries and cultures together and I look forward to leading this great group of very talented individuals,” he added. Shreyas Iyer became the third most expensive buy in the mega auction 2022 as KKR splashed INR 12.25 crore for him.
