The former Indian cricketer and now the commentator Virender Sehwag has taken a sly dig at the Indian wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha over DRS calls. The Bengal cricketer took up the job behind the stumps when MS Dhoni hanged his boots in the Test format a few years ago. Since then, he has been the crucial part of the team and has played important roles with his skills. However, Viru feels that he isn’t the right person to consult when it comes to taking review on the field during the match.

MS Dhoni, his predecessor and the current wicketkeeper in the limited overs format, has been near-perfect in taking DRS calls in the recent past. Most of the times Virat Kohli has challenged the umpire’s decision only because of the veteran’s insistence. Saha, on the other hand, is still getting eased into his role and has made a few mistakes in taking reviews in the past. Though he has been animated enough in the discussions during the game which shows he is always in the game.

What prompted Sehwag to say?

The incident happened when Virat Kohli was caught in front off Lakshan Sandakan on 243 and was given out by the on-field umpire. He consulted with his partner Saha and decided to go for the review which turned out to be a straightforward call as the ball was comfortably going on to hit the leg-stump and India also lost a review in the process. Virender Sehwag, who is the Hindi commentator, questioned Saha’s role in taking DRS calls on the field.

Viru was not happy as the Indian skipper wasted the review and felt Saha was of no use when it came to DRS because he can’t even make a decision while on the field. He also said that consulting him for review is a complete waste of time and lacks the ability to strong calls. Though he didn’t make any strong remarks against him as Saha is good in his cricketing skills and will eventually improve in making crucial decisions as far as DRS is concerned.
