Former Indian opener, Virender Sehwag took to Twitter to wish the Australian pace master, Sir Dennis Lillee on his birthday. Sir Lillee, considered by many to have been “the complete bowler”, was the heart of Australia’s attack for more than a decade. The legend turned 68 on Tuesday.

Virender Sehwag, known for his wit and impeccable sense of humour, posted a picture of Sir Lillee in his Twitter post, with a caption that read, “Happy Birthday to one of the greatest bowlers of all time, Bowlers Ke Baahubali , Sir Dennis Lillee !” He had tweeted a similar witty post on the legendary pacer’s previous birthday as well. Lillee, who made his test debut in 1971,  has also retained a high profile through his commitment to developing new generations of fast bowlers since his retirement.

About the fiery Dennis Lillee

Having played for Australia, Northamptonshire, Tasmania and Western Australia, Lillee was known for his fiery temperament, ‘never-say-die’ attitude and popularity with the fans. He garnered humongous crowd support in his years of play through a combination of ability, strength of character, showmanship and sheer hard work. The crowds could often be heard chanting his name as he ran in to bowl.

Armed with supreme pace and impenetrable aggression, Sir Dennis Lillee holds a staggering total of 355 wickets in 70 Test matches with an outstanding average of 23.92. He bowled at an economy of only 2.75, and has 23 five-wicket hauls in Test cricket to his name. In his playing career, he also broke Lance Gibbs’ world record of 309 Test wickets.

When Lillee came on to the international scene, he bowled with frightening pace. In December 1971, he reduced a powerful World XI side to rubble in Perth, taking 8 for 29 in the first innings, and went on to claim 31 Test wickets at 17.67 during the 1972 Ashes tour.  His best Test figures were achieved in a remarkable match against West Indies in 1981, with 7 for 83 in the first innings and 10 wickets for the match.

As for his figures in the One-Day International (ODI) games, Lillee picked up 103 wickets in 63 matches at an average of 20.82. Lillee retired from ODis in 1983 and subsequently from Test cricket in the year 1984. He was named in Australia’s Test Team of the Century and the Hall of Fame and currently has an international reputation as a fast bowling coach.
