In what has been a next to a disastrous season so far for the men from the capital, Delhi Daredevils couldn’t have asked for anything worse as their designated skipper in Gautam Gambhir decides to step down from his captaincy role. Gambhir, who was roped in by the franchise with lots of hope ahead of the new season to revive Delhi’s fortune in the league, wasn’t able to live up to the expectations of the fans and franchise at Delhi Daredevils.

After a dismal show with the bat, even some of his decisions were under the radar after the side was languishing at the bottom of the table with a solitary win from the six games played so far. The skipper has shown great courage to take the onus on himself for the side’s poor show in the tournament so far.

Was he asked to step-down?

Hours after the skipper revealed that he has decided to move on from his captaincy duties for the team, there were speculations if he was forced to arrive at such a shocking season in the mid-season. But putting all rumours to rest, the franchise took to Twitter to announce that the decision was solely made by Gautam with no sorts of pressure from the management or the franchise.

“Dear #DD fans we would like to share @GautamGambhir has chosen to step down as a captain for @DelhiDaredevils a decision taken by him only. We as a franchise salute this courageous call of his, a first in India cricket! A true #dilliwala #Legendary,” the franchise tweeted via their official twitter handle.

Here’s the tweet:

Shreyas Iyer will lead the side

As a follow to the tweet, the franchise was quick to add that as his replacement, Gambhir has nominated Shreyas Iyer as the next skipper to lead the side for the remaining part of the competition. Iyer, who has been in sublime form in the matches played so far, was considerably the apt person to take the team forward in a situation of complete distress. The tweet read, “Dear DD fans continuing on our last tweet  @GautamGambhir nominated #ShreyasIyer as the next @DelhiDaredevils captain! #VIVOIPL #DilDilli #DilliDhadkega”.
