The young and dynamic all-rounder of India Washington Sundar was felicitated with the ‘Young Achiever Award’ by Rotary Club of Madras Chenna Patna in Chennai. He donned the jersey for India in ODI and T20I in December last year against Sri Lanka. He was also picked up by Royal Challengers Bangalore for a whopping amount of Rs 3.2 Crore in the recently concluded IPL auction. Sundar had played for Rising Pune Supergiant in 2016 under the leadership of Steve Smith.

The 18-year-old was on the radar of the selectors ever since he played for the country at the U19 level and displayed his prowess. He also shone in the local T20 competition Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) opening the innings for his team and also his off-spin has bamboozled many batsmen. Sundar is one to watch out for in the future and will be a vital cog in the national side.

Sundar thanks all who supported him

After receiving the award Washington Sundar was emotional and thanked everyone who supported him during the tough times in his career. “People around me have been great and always wanted me to do well. I have a lot of people to thank as they have supported me in each phase of my life. I must thank (Prince of Arcot’s son) Mohammed Asif Ali, who generously offered the Amir Mahal grounds for practice during my formative years. He has gone out of the way to ensure I received top-notch practice facilities at the ground,” he said.

The former India spinner M Venkatramana has helped Sundar with his constant inputs in becoming a better cricketer. He believed that the youngster’s real test would be staying grounded in the near future. “Washington’s biggest strength lies in his self-belief. He is never overawed by the batsman’s credentials and backs his abilities. All he has to do now is to continue working hard and stay grounded,” Venkatraman told PTI.
