English county club Lancashire have confirmed that Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar suffered a shoulder injury during their One-Day Cup clash against Worcestershire on Wednesday, August 10. There is no official update on the extent of his injury yet but Lancashire said that that the player left the field after receiving treatment on his left shoulder following a heavy landing during a fielding.

The 22-year-old bowling all-rounder is part of India’s upcoming three-match ODI tour to Zimbabwe, starting August 18. Earlier in the year, Sundar injured his bowling hand during the 2022 Indian Premier League season while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad and missed a considerable amount of matches.

He joined Lancashire to regain his match fitness last month and has been in good form for the English county side so far. He has played two County Championship matches where he scored 52 runs and scalped eight wickets. He took three wickets in the first two domestic 50-over matches, but is likely to miss the remaining fixtures due to his recent injury.

“Washington Sundar has left the field after receiving treatment on his left shoulder following a heavy landing. No breakthroughs with the ball just yet. 27-0 (8),” Lancashire tweeted.

The youngster has played four Tests and 35 white-ball international matches for the Indian team so far. He boasts an average of 66.25 in Test matches and has taken 25 wickets in 31 T20I matches at an impressive economy rate of 7.24. With many talented all-round options competing for a place in the national team, he has struggled to maintain his place of late.

Both Deepak Chahar and Sundar are part of the Zimbabwe tour will be looking to target selection for the 2022 T20 World Cup in October-November. However, Sundar’s recent injury is likely to hamper his chances for a spot in the mega tournament in Australia. India have only Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel as two quality spin options available on the Zimbabwe tour and the management is likely to select Sundar’s replacement if the player is having a serious injury issue.

India have opted to go with Ravindra Jadeja and Ravi Ashwin as their preferred all-round spin options for the upcoming 2022 Asia Cup in the UAE. Sundar still has time to prove his worth for selection to the World Cup squad but it all depends on how serious his recent injury turns out to be.
