Cricket in Pakistan hasn’t seen the best of times in the last decade or so. Security concerns have led to international cricketers not willing to travel to the war-stricken nation. Issues have also occurred surrounding availability of players in the prestigious Pakistan Super League (PSL). The Sri Lankan bus attack turned out to be a massive detriment to their cricket.
The incident tarnished the reputation of their cricket and ever since Pakistan play a chunk of their home matches in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). However, Zimbabwe toured them back in 2015 and the limited-overs series also marked the return of cricket in Pakistan. The supporters came in bunches, cheered both the teams and welcomed Zimbabwe for the gesture.
The World XI and Sri Lanka have also gone to the country for some T20 encounters. Even eight matches in next edition’s PSL would take place in Pakistan. The Windies Women are now scheduled to tour Pakistan for a three-match ODI series and a three-match T20I series. The 20-overs matches would play at the Southend Club Cricket Stadium in Pakistan.
Akram hails West Indies
The ODIs would take place at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. The tour starts tomorrow with the ODI series. All the matches are Day fixtures. Last year in April, the Windies men’s team also toured Pakistan for a three-match T20I series. The hosts clean swept their opponents 3-0.
In the meantime, Wasim Akram, the former Pakistan cricketer, sounded delighted by the upcoming women’s international fixtures. He also hailed them a passionate cricket nation.
He took to Twitter and wrote, “Well done to the West Indies, a nation so passionate that they trailblaze their way to Pakistan for the love of cricket & friendship!Welcome @windieswomen to our country, thank you for giving our @WomenCricketPak a chance to play at home on their own soil! #WomensCricket #PAKWvWIW,”
