Watch: Brian Lara falls to Kumble while attempting a clumsy shot

2 Min Read

Brian Lara and Anil Kumble were once again facing each other. However, this time, both individuals were not in their national colors but were playing for different teams for charity.

The occasion was the World Cricket Tsunami Appeal Match between International XI and Asia XI in the year 2005.

The International XI team had to chase a target of 158 runs in the 20-over put-up by Asia XI team. International XI was in a tough situation. They had a daunting task of chasing 109 runs of just 77 balls to win the match.

Anil Kumble was introduced in the bowling attack. The batsman set to face his bowling was none other than the charismatic Brian Lara.

Anil Kumble was ready to ball to Lara. Kumble bowls a regular leg break. Lara misjudges the ball as he tries to play a pre-meditated scoop shot towards the fine leg region. However, Lara completely misses as he moves too wide in the crease and exposes the stumps completely. The ball after nicking his gloves falls straight onto the stumps.

Brian Lara was evidently struggling to score quickly and tried something unorthodox which he would not normally do. He made 9 runs off 18 deliveries.

At the time when Lara was dismissed, International XI looked off track in the chase. However, the match had a very exciting finish as Australian opener G Blewett’s 91 and Scott Styris’ late flourish with the bat turned the match head over heels. International XI stole the victory after being at a bothersome situation at one stage.

The event was very successful. Both teams raised 500,000 Euros for the Tsunami Relief Fund.
