Former India skipper Kapil Dev was handed the honor of being the first person to ring the bell at the Eden Gardens. While the installation of the bell itself has been somewhat of a historic event in itself, it seemed as this became only the second ground in the world to have a bell installed.
It is generally used at the Home of Cricket, the Lord’s Cricket ground to commence the start of play. While it has been predominantly used as a traditional item in Lord’s, the tradition is set to repeat each time a match is played at the Eden Gardens now in. However, while there exists a Space shuttle style box in the Saurashtra Cricket Association Ground, the Eden Gardens is by far one of the iconic grounds in the world.
Thus, before the start of play, Kapil Dev, the charismatic former Indian skipper who led the Indians to their first ever World Cup win in 1983 struck the bell thrice as the players acknowledged the call and made their way into the middle to begin the match. The video was also subsequently filmed by Star Sports presenter Jatin Sapru.
Team India made a couple of changes in the starting XI and similar was the case with the Kiwis. The morning session, however, went quite awry as far as the Indians were concerned when they lost three quick wickets courtesy of the pace of Trent Boult and the rest of the bowlers. Matt Henry, coming in for the underperforming Ish Sodhi impressed when he picked two wickets on the morning, thus putting the Indians well and truly on the back foot.
