The 3rd Test of the 4 match series, The Wisden Trophy, between the home side England and West Indies witnessed an unusual dismissal of the home side’s star batsman, Kevin Pietersen. This match was played in June 2007 at the historic ground of Old Trafford in Manchester. It was a thrilling contest that kept everyone interested until the end. Batting first England scored 370 and in reply the visitors could manage only 229.
At 99/2 in the second innings, KP walked out to bat and looked in fine form. He stroked his way to 68 with the help of 7 boundaries before experiencing a bizarre dismissal. The West Indian all-rounder Dwayne Bravo has the knack of breaking partnerships and coming up with something special time and again. Though, Bravo himself might have never expected to see something as unusual as he did. The right-arm medium pacer has a sharp bouncer which can surprise any batsmen. He doesn’t have express pace, however, mixes up his length and occasionally ups his pace to great effect. He bowled a perfect bouncer to the tall KP that surprised the flamboyant batsman.
KP set himself up for a pull, however, the ball hurried onto him and he tried to sway away from the line rather awkwardly. The ball thundered into his helmet, blew it off and took it straight onto the stumps! KP was shell shocked for a moment and couldn’t quiet fathom what had just transpired. The ball had hit the helmet at the back of the neck and dazed KP as suggested by his gingerly walk toward the dressing room. The sheer impact of the ball on the protective gear brought about this strange dismissal of hit wicket. The match was eventually won by the home side as West Indies fell short by 60 runs chasing a target of 455 however not before a valiant effort.
