The fourth day of the 2nd Test match between Australia and West Indies witnessed an unusual shot from Australian skipper Steve Smith. The West Indian bowler bowled a short ball to which Smith reacted in a freakish manner, playing a tennis-like shot. The Aussie skipper was unbeaten on both innings. He scored a sublime 134* in the first innings and went on to score another 70* in the second.
Smith had played a freakish shot during this year’s Ashes against England too. With England positioning just two fielders on the leg side, Smith stepped a metre outside his off-stump and clipped Broad between his front and back legs to raise his half-century. He repeated the stroke the very next ball.
“He’s in good nick, he’s in cheeky nick,” said David Lloyd during the Channel Nine commentary.
“This is a carnival,” added Mark Nicholas.
The likes of Glenn Maxwell and Kevin Pietersen have also contributed to these bizarre shot trends. KP was seen playing those witch-hits several times while Maxwell’s reverse sweep has been a dangerous weapon for him
The Australian skipper received the cricketer of the year award as well as Test cricketer of the year award during this year’s ICC Awards ceremony.
West Indies looked good for a fight back but in the end, it was too little too late. Australia have now clinched the series, going into the third Test match at Sydney.
