Back in the day, the square cut off the back foot from Steve Waugh was one of the wonders in cricket. The wrist movements, the chewing gum, and the baggy green cap were something that will never be forgotten as long as cricket history remains to be a relevant topic of discussion. Part of the reason why Waugh was called ‘Tugga’ was the square cut, something he stamped his authority on.

Of course, this was not the only shot Steve Waugh played. Everyone remembers those flicks off the pads and wristy cover-drives, something Rahul Dravid had perfected in the years leading up to his retirement. However, one of the biggest aspects of Waugh’s game was his solidity with the bat, something not many modern-day batsmen have managed to achieve.

However, when we believed that we would never see the flashes of brilliance of the ‘Steve Waugh tradition’ again, we were well and truly wrong. While the lucky folks present at the NSW Metro match watch Austin Waugh, Steve’s son smash the ball to different parts of the suburban stadium, others were reminded of the man they fell in love with shortly after 1985.

The 17-year old Austin Waugh smashed his way to a blistering 122 and brought up his ton with a massive six over deep extra cover. According to a report from the Australian Cricket board, the 17-year turned heads throughout the duration of the championships, taking the mantle of leading run scorer for Metro NSW with 372 runs at an average of 74.4.

Only Queensland’s Angus Lovell, who has hit two centuries and three half-centuries at 80.17, has outscored him. Steve Waugh has made it clear he doesn’t want to place too much pressure on his son, and the relaxed approach seems to be working.
