On August 15, 2019, VB Chandrasekhar, the former Indian opening batsman, committed suicide at his residence in Chennai. His body was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his bedroom on the first floor. No suicide note was found though from his room. Chandrasekhar, who passed away at the age of 57, didn’t have a great career for India but was a stalwart in the domestic circuit.
He was a national selector at a time when MS Dhoni, the former Indian captain, was trying to break into the national team. He had a great rapport with the wicketkeeper. But there was one incident when Dhoni’s actions didn’t please Chandrasekhar by any stretch of the imagination. The latter didn’t know Dhoni back then and he made the revelations in an interview, earlier this year.
He gave a pleasant smile and introduced himself as MS Dhoni
“I first met Dhoni at Hyderabad when I was a selector. There was no wicket-keeper for India A encounter against Pakistan. It was a late night and this guy (Dhoni) had not turned up till then for the match which was scheduled to happen tomorrow morning. I tried calling some people but none of them knew about Dhoni’s whereabouts,” Chandrasekhar was quoted as saying in Behindwoods.
VB Chandrasekhar was utterly frustrated with MS Dhoni and he went into his room, comprehending what had happened on the day. Later, he got the shock of life when the then youngster was there at his doorsteps at 11 pm in the night. Chandrasekhar had told that ever since that incident the Jharkhand-born cricketer started growing in stature and groomed himself as a player and individual.
“Then there was a knock on my door at around 11 pm, and I thought it was a waiter and there was this guy with long hair standing in front of me. Since I haven’t met Dhoni before not even seen a photo of him, I did not know who the guy was,” he stated.
“He gave a pleasant smile and introduced himself as MS Dhoni. He told in a very cool tone. I was like dude its 11 pm, and Dhoni was like I am here (he’s made it, like that’s all matters). From there he went on to grow every single day,” he added.
As far as Chandrasekhar’s demise is concerned, his wife got to know about it when she knocked on the door. After her husband didn’t open the door, she peeped through the window to find him hanging. She informed the police that VB was depressed due to the losses he had incurred in his cricket business. The incident has left the entire cricketing fraternity in utter shock.
