Match-fixing is a grave mistake. However, not reporting any such approaches is equally a crime. Such actions have a direct impact on the game and don’t do any good to all the measures that are being taken to curb fixing. Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has learnt this the hard way. Former Sri Lanka cricketer, Russel Arnold didn’t seem too pleased with this either.

The cricketer was approached by an Indian bookie thrice in the past for some inside information. The first of such sort happened during the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2017. Then, Shakib Al Hasan was contacted yet again during a tri-series early in 2018. After this, he has approached during the IPL as well. But, the cricketer didn’t report any of these to the ICC Anti-corruption Unit. About the same, the ICC ACU interrogated him in January and August this year. After thorough investigations, they finally put their verdict out on Tuesday.

The apex cricket council slapped Shakib Al Hasan with a two-year suspension. Since this is backdated, his ban period ends on 29 October 2020. In the meanwhile, Shakib will miss out on two major tournaments. These include the Indian Premier League (IPL) next year. Also, he won’t be a part of the Bangladesh squad for the T20 World Cup in Australia later in 2020.

Name and shame says, Russel Arnold

Former Sri Lanka cricketer Russel Arnold expressed disappointment about the incident. In his tweet, he wrote that another one is down for not reporting an approach. However, he questioned who the real fixers were and asked who was actually doing all this. Name and shame, he wrote in his tweet. With this, he must have implied that strict action should be taken against all the people who actually try to indulge the cricketers in all such evil stuff.

“So another one done for not reporting an approach but who are the real fixers ?? Whose actually doing it #nameandshame,” his tweet read.

Shakib Al Hasan is an indispensable part of the Bangladesh side and had a dream run in the recent World Cup 2019. The cricketer found support from the fans, the board as well as the Prime Minister of the country.
