Young right handed batsman Will Jacks has been named as the skipper of the English U19 side for their upcoming limited overs fixtures against India U19. Jacks has replaced the regular captain Harry Brook in the captaincy role. Apparently, it was the fine knock against India U19 in the four day fixtures by Will Jacks that earned him the captain’s hat for the one day games. India U19 will be led by Prithwi Shaw.
Last week, when England U19 hosted India U19 in the second four day game of the series, Jacks scored a quick 102 off just 111 deliveries. However, his knock went in vain as the Indian colts registered a 97 run win in the match. The England U19 team will miss the services of regular skipper Harry Brook and all-rounder Matt Potts in the first two games of the five-match series.
Brook has been called by the Yorkshire side for the County Championships and Potts will be serving Durham in the same competition. They will join the squad for the last three games. Fin Trenouth has been called into the side as a cover for Brook in the meantime. The head coach of the team, Andy Hurry, believes that Will Jacks will do a decent role as the captain. He conceded that the ton by Jacks last week was a morale boost for the entire team.
As per the quotes in Wisden India, he quoted, “In the first Test, I don’t think we competed at all, so it was pleasing that we improved for the second Test. Will Jacks getting a hundred in the second Test was again a significant stride in the right direction from a team perspective as well as an individual one. There’s so much to look forward to over the winter as well and I’m convinced that we’ll take significant learnings – alongside the chance to test their skills under pressure – from the one-day series.”
