India are oozing with confidence after clean-sweeping Windies in the three-match T20I series. All the games were pretty one-sided which showed the level of domination the visiting team had in the shorter format. The Caribbean batters, especially the ones in the top order, didn’t show much responsibility and threw wickets away. They have been guilty of doing so even in the One-Day cricket.

It’s now time for the ODI series, which gets underway on August 8 at the Providence Stadium in Guyana. Jason Holder and Co had a poor campaign in the World Cup, beating only Pakistan and Afghanistan. Virat Kohli and his troops bowed out of the same tournament after the semis, but they had a great run in the league stages. In their last meeting, India thrashed the Windies by 125 runs in Manchester.

Pitch and Conditions

The venue has hosted 21 ODIs thus far and 13 of them were won by the team, batting first. The ground isn’t an overly high-scoring one with an average score of around 233. It rained in Guyana during the last T20I and there are severe chances of a downpour even on Thursday, especially from 9 AM in the morning to 12 PM. There could be a delayed start if not a washout.

Team Combinations

Windies

Chris Gayle returns to the mix after his GT20 duties in Canada. Evin Lewis faltered in all the three T20Is and John Campbell may return for the ODIs. Shai Hope, one of their most consistent batters in the 50-overs format, had a lacklustre World Cup and he will be keen to make amends. Nicholas Pooran has been one of Windies’ standout players and he’ll need to bring forth his A-game.

Shimron Hetmyer has blown hot and cold of late and he has to find some consistency. Roston Chase and Jason Holder lend solidity to the batting. Fabian Allen may get a chance after his decent shows in recent times. The onus will be on Sheldon Cottrell to lead the pace attack. Oshane Thomas didn’t have a great World Cup by any means, but has the ingredients to make a strong comeback.

Probable XI

Chris Gayle, Evin Lewis/John Campbell, Shai Hope (WK), Nicholas Pooran, Shimron Hetmyer, Roston Chase, Jason Holder (C), Carlos Brathwaite, Fabian Allen, Sheldon Cottrell, Oshane Thomas.

India

For the Men in Blue, Manish Pandey played all the T20Is even as Shreyas Iyer had to warm the bench. The latter may get a chance in the One Dayers. Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal played very few games together in the World Cup and it will be interesting to see whether both of them make the eleven or not. There would be a temptation to give Navdeep Saini his ODI cap.

Saini sparkled in the first T20I, getting three wickets, and he carried on with the form later as well. Ravindra Jadeja may also be preferred after how he did in the World Cup final. Bhuvneshwar Kumar remains to be the most experienced in the bowling unit. In batting, Rohit Sharma, captain Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan will need to set the platform. It’s also a chance for Rishabh Pant to show his mettle.

Probable XI

Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli (C), Shreyas Iyer/Manish Pandey, Rishabh Pant (WK), Kedar Jadhav, Ravindra Jadeja, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Kuldeep Yadav/Yuzvendra Chahal, Mohammed Shami, Khaleel Ahmed/Navdeep Saini.
