The 2019-20 season of the Women’s Big Bash League was filled up with two action-packed encounters. The first encounter was a high-scoring thriller between Brisban Heat Women and Melbourne Renegades Women where both the teams amassed a massive score on the board.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Melbourne posted a competitive total of 183 runs on the scoreboard. The duo of Beth Mooney and Jess Jonassen anchored their side with their explosive knocks. Opener Mooney propelled Brisbane to a good start with her brilliant 51-ball 86 runs knock. After the departure of Maddy Green, Jonassen stepped up for her team and smashed a quick-fire half-century. She scored 51 runs in 34 balls including six fours and a six.

Despite posting a challenging total on the board, Brisbane Heat could not withstand the batting performance of Danni Wyatt. The opener was awarded ‘Player of the Match’ for her impressive knock of 87 runs off 55 balls. She was assisted by skipper Jess Duffin, who remained unbeaten and finished things off for Melbourne by scoring 50 runs in just 27 balls. Melbourne achieved the target with one over remaining, taking their tally to 12 points from six games. They are currently placed fifth in the points table. Brisbane Heat, who are sitting on the top of the table, were stunned by lower-placed Melbourne Renegades.

Alex Blackwell steered the ship of Sydney Thunder Women and guided her side to a competitive total.

Sydney Thunder Women and Melbourne Stars Women locked horns in the second encounter of the day. After losing the toss and put to bat first, Sydney gathered 162 runs on the board at the loss of six wickets. Opener Naomi Stalenberg scored 30 runs off 21 balls but could not convert her innings to a big one as she was dismissed in the seventh over.

Alex Blackwell steered the ship of Sydney and guided her side to a competitive total. Blackwell scored 65 runs off 47 balls including 9 fours and a six. Annabel Sutherland was the pick of the Melbourne Stars’ bowlers as she scalped 2 wickets in her spell. Blackwell was named ‘Player of the Match’ for her crucial knock.

While chasing a target of 163 runs, Melbourne’s batting force collapsed after the departure of Elyse Villani and Mignon du Preez. Skipper Villani scored 43 runs off 35 balls to set the ball rolling for her side. She was joined by Perez, who gathered 55 runs in 50 balls. However, Melbourne were unsuccessful in chasing down the target. Sydney’s Rene Farrell helped her side by providing early breakthroughs with the ball.
