One of the most memorable incidents in the last decade has to be the World Cup 2019 final between England and New Zealand. The game went into a Super Over after England managed to tie the score with New Zealand, and there was another tie, in the Super Over, when both teams scored 15 runs. The Kiwis knew that they had to score 16 to win the game, as a tie would go in favour of the host nation on boundary count. However, Martin Guptill needed two off the last ball to ensure a win, and he was run out going for the second run.
A similar instance happened in the ongoing Women’s World Cup 2022 between New Zealand and England, where the host nation put up a score of 203 in their 50 overs. While chasing, England were cruising at one stage but a flurry of wickets saw them reeling at 196/9 with four more overs to go. Anya Shrubsole, the No. 11 batter, was happy to keep rotating the strike, and brought down the situation to just two runs needed in the end.
Shrubsole hit one through the mid-wicket and screamed for two immediately, which was very similar to Guptill scampering for the second in the 2019 World Cup. However, it was England that prevailed on both occasions, and such has been New Zealand’s luck in close games at the moment. ICC on Instagram found the two incidents almost identical and shared a video showing both close margins.
