Before the start of the 2019 edition of the World Cup, hosts England was being considered as one of the strongest contenders to win the championship. The Eoin Morgan-captained unit started with a resounding victory in the opening match versus South Africa at the Kennington Oval in London. However, as the tournament progressed, the Three Lions encountered a few hurdles.

The Brits lost to Pakistan and then a couple of back-to-back games against Sri Lanka and Australia. After the drubbings, there was a chance of the team, getting knocked out of the mega event. They didn’t have their premier batsman – Jason Roy for a few games owing to a hamstring injury that he developed during the match versus the Windies. But he made his comeback against India.

At the Edgbaston in Birmingham, England beat the Men in Blue and then rolled over New Zealand to seal their spot in the next round. Even Jonny Bairstow, who was straining for a bit of form in the first few matches, came into his own and churned out two centuries in a row. England went from strength to strength and came out all guns blazing in the semi-final against Australia.

Pietersen doesn’t think New Zealand can pose a challenge

In Birmingham, the home team won by eight wickets and booked their berth in the final of the mega event after 1992. Chris Woakes bowled a stupendous spell after which the English batters didn’t have any difficulty whatsoever in chasing down the target. England is currently playing the final versus the Black Caps at the renowned Lord’s Cricket Ground, also known as the Home of Cricket.

In the league stage, England beat the Kiwis by 119 runs at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street and stamped their authority. In the meantime, Kevin Pietersen, the former English batsman, reckons that the Three Lions won’t have to drop much sweat in winning their maiden World Cup.

Pietersen, who made his final appearance for England back in 2014, took to Twitter and wrote, “You’ve made it to the home of cricket, herringboneandsui…! I’m thinking an easy WIN for England! Agree?!?! @ Lord’s Cricket Ground,”
