For Team India, KL Rahul moved up to the opening slot to partner Rohit Sharma as Shikhar Dhawan has been ruled out of the ICC World Cup 2019 for at least the next 2-3 weeks. Rahul opened the batting for the first time with Rohit Sharma in ODIs, in a crunch match at the Old Trafford in Manchester, as India take on arch-rivals Pakistan in a super Sunday encounter.

India was asked to bat first by Sarfaraz Ahmed, who won the toss. The Men in Blue made one change to the playing xi as all-rounder Vijay Shankar came into the side in place of Dhawan. Pakistan however, made two changes as Shadab Khan and Imad Wasim, two spinners got the chance in place of Asif Ali.

Rohit Sharma and Dhawan have formed an amazing opening combination for India at the top after coming together in the ICC Champions Trophy 2013 in England. The duo has opened for India 103 times and has become one of the most successful opening pairs in limited-overs cricket thanks to their terrific understanding, coordination and ability to judge quick singles.

This was something that was missing when Rahul and Rohit were batting, they were really struggling with the calls for runs and the running between the wickets was clearly a bit off. Both the players seemed hesitant to just hit in the gap and run and this almost cost the team a wicket in the 10th over of the match. Rahul hit Wahab Riaz in the open space on the leg side and set off for what seemed to be like a double.

Rahul touched down the started to run for the second and Rohit responded to the call, but the fielder reached the ball quicker than anticipated and this made Rahul hesitate about the run and sent Rohit back, who was halfway down the pitch by that time. It was a wicket gift wrapped for the Pakistan team, only if the fielder Fakhar Zaman had thrown the ball to the keeper’s end where there was a clear chance of a run out.

However, Zaman threw to the bowling end and by the time the ball was relayed to Sarfraz at the batting end, Rohit had made the ground. He glared hard at Rahul for almost selling him a dummy. Watch the whole incident in a video and how Pakistani fielding’s clumsiness handed Rohit a reprieve.
