In a rare incidence, fans will see a Test match advancing to the sixth day. This will happen when India and New Zealand take the field on June 23 to conclude the World Test Championship final. The high-voltage clash is underway at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton, but unfortunately, a major part of the encounter has been washed out due to rain. Subsequently, five days haven’t been enough to determine the winner.
Nevertheless, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has allocated a reserve day, which will effectively be Day 6, to make up for the lost time due to rain. Hence, a significant part of the game is still left, and it would be interesting to see how it pans out. Speaking about how the game has unfolded so far, New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson won the crucial toss and elected to bowl first.
The Kiwi bowlers justified their captain’s decision and bundled India out for mere 217 runs. Notably, the likes of Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane tackled the Dukes ball impressively and made handy contributions. However, Kyle Jamieson ran through India’s middle-order and registered a five-wicket haul, restricting Kohli’s side to a mediocre total.
In reply, New Zealand got off to a flying start with their openers Tom Latham and Devon Conway, adding 70 runs for the first wicket. Just when the game seemed like slipping away from India’s grasp, the bowlers stepped up and took wickets. As a result, the likes of Ross Taylor and Henry Nicholls went back without contributing much. However, a significant part of the game is still, and it would be interesting to see how it unfolds.
Here’s a look at how the weather will play on WTC Final Reserve day
With over two days of play washed out due to rain, the reserve day has a massive role to play. Fortunately, the weather is expected to be cricket-friendly on the last day. As per accuweather.com, the weather would be mostly sunny, and clouds will not have much part to play. Hence, the Hampshire groundsmen can afford to breathe easy.
Even the wind gusts would go out of the occasion, and humidity would be on the lower side. So, a fascinating day of Test cricket is lined up, and both teams should come up with a solid plan. Notably, if the game ends in a draw, India and New Zealand will share the World Test Championship title.
