The Indian Premier League (IPL) is undoubtedly the toughest T20 league in the world. With multiple franchises and a huge amount of attention, it is difficult for anyone to shine in the biggest T20 league in the world. Till now, even after so many years, only a few players have been able to maintain their consistency in the league. This showcases why it provides the perfect platform to test the strength of a player.

Apart from the IPL, there are numerous T20 leagues in the world. But, the only league that can reach the level of success is the Big Bash League. However, another league, the Pakistan Super League has been able to make it to the headlines. This is also an attempt to find the top talents in the Pakistan Cricketing circuit.

But, as the Pakistan cricketers are barred from participating in the IPL, only the ones who have been playing in the overseas slot are taken into consideration in this list. These players have managed to do well in the PSL, but they have failed in the IPL. Because of the difference in the level of competition, there is a huge amount of pressure for anyone who enters the IPL. So, let us have a look at –

Stars from PSL who failed in IPL

10. Rilee Rossouw

Rilee Rossouw is a top-order batsman who made a mark during the Champions League T20. During a game against Trinidad and Tobago, he smashed a 19-ball 44 in 2009. During that time, the Bangalore franchise was looking for major changes in their squad, they included him for the next edition of the IPL. Although he failed to get a game during that season, Rossouw had the talent to make it to the national team.

He had to wait till 2014, as Nic Maddinson was out with a finger injury and RCB resigned him. But, he was able to play only 5 IPL games in his career. With a run tally of 53 runs, he has not been able to cement his place in the IPL circuit. Rossouw has a mediocre strike rate of 103.92 in the tournament.

But, he has been a great asset for his franchise in the PSL. He has scored 1012 runs with a strike rate of 131.42. Adding on, Rossouw has a century to his name. A healthy batting average of 32.64 makes him one of the most successful batsmen in the tournament.

9. Colin Ingram

Colin Ingram is another South African who was talented but failed to make a mark on the international stage. He is a clean striker of the white ball and could play match-winning innings for his team. But, a packed South African team and IPL franchises meant that he had to sit out on most of the occasions. Things would have been a lot better if he had been given more chances.

Ingram made his IPL debut in 2011, against the Mumbai Indians. In his first IPL game, he could not handle the pressure of the debut as Malinga bowled him for just a single run. Ingram has been unable to shine in the IPL. Till now, he has played only 15 games in approximately 10 years.

A run tally of 205 runs with the highest score of 47 is not satisfactory either. But Ingram has been one of the top run-scorers in the PSL. With 819 runs at a strike rate of 146.77, he is one of the biggest names in the league. He has the highest score of 127, which showcases his ability to play big innings in the shortest format of the game.

8. Ravi Bopara

Ravi Bopara was a regular member of the English squad during the late 2000s and early 2011s. He is an all-rounder who could hold the middle order together and bowl in like a medium pacer. Bopara, because of his ability to hit the ball cleanly and bowl in a couple of overs, was a valuable asset for any team he played. But, he failed to play for the national and IPL franchises consistently.

Bopara has played 24 IPL games so far. With a run tally of 531 and a poor strike rate of 117.22, he was never able to cement his place as an overseas player. Adding on, the emergence of various international T20 stars meant that Bopara had to warm the benches. Eventually, he went unsold in the auctions.

Bopara has taken 11 wickets in 24 IPL games so far. But, his PSL stats are decent, this is mainly because he has scored 775 runs with an average of 28.70. Adding on, he has picked 15 wickets in his PSL career. The most attractive part of his PSL career is his best bowling figures of 6/16.

7. Luke Ronchi

Luke Ronchi is a wicketkeeper-batsman who has played both for Australia and New Zealand. He is an attacking batsman who can take the game away with ease. His T20I strike rate of 140.23 showcases his talent with the bat. Ronchi was a regular member of the Kiwi side in the mid-2010s.

But, Ronchi failed to impress at the IPL. He was picked up by the Mumbai Indians and in two years of his participation at the tournament, he managed to play only 5 games. He scored 34 runs with a poor strike rate of 100. Therefore, he was unable to get any bidders later on in his career.

However, Ronchi has been sensational in the PSL. With a run tally of 1020 runs at a strike rate of 166.12, he has been one of the few players in the tournament who have a strike rate over 150. Ronchi has the highest score of 94 in the PSL too, thus it seems that he deserves more chances in the IPL. A clinical performance with the bat in the PSL enabled Ronchi to make it to this list.

6. Daren Sammy

Daren Sammy will go down as the most iconic captain in the T20 format. Under his leadership, the West Indies managed to win the T20 World Cup in 2012, and 2016. He was successful in leading from the front and had an impressive T20I career. He is so influential in the Caribbean that they have an international stadium named after him.

But, Sammy failed to gain any sort of momentum in the toughest T20 league in the world. In the IPL, he played 22 games and managed to score 295 runs. A mediocre strike rate of 122.41 never helped him to retain his spot in the squad. Adding on, he had a high economy rate of 8.9 in his IPL career.

Well, Sammy has been a successful player in the PSL. With 691 runs to his name, he has been scoring at a healthy strike rate of 146.39. It looks like the West Indies legend has been able to replicate his international success in the PSL. But, he has been unable to make a mark in the IPL.

5. Alex Hales

Alex Hales is one of the biggest names in the T20 circuit. He is a clean striker of the ball and has done wonders for the English team. He played an important role during an ODI game for England as they posted 481 runs in 50 overs. Hales scored 147 runs in 92 balls for his team.

But, with the rise of many limited-overs specialists, Hales had to warm the benches for most of the late 2010 decade. The story is the same for Hales in the IPL as he repeatedly fails to get a place in any franchise. Well, this is not his fault as he has been phenomenal in the BBL. Six games for an international star seems too few as he failed to score big in the IPL.

Hales has scored 540 runs in his PSL career. With a healthy strike rate of 143.61, he has managed to play match-winning innings for his team. In the total of 19 PSL games, he has been a part of Islamabad United and the Karachi Kings. Well, the highest score of 80 also showcases that he has been up to the mark in the tournament.

4. David Wiese

David Wiese is another South African in this list who failed to succeed at the international level as well as in the IPL. The tall medium-pacer is well known as a bowler who could bat down the order. But, a highly competitive tournament like the IPL meant that he had to sit out of the team for most of the time. He was a part of the RCB squad in the two seasons he played.

Wiese has played 15 IPL games for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. In those games, he managed to score 127 runs with a healthy average of 141.11. But, his poor form in bowling meant that he had to make way for some other bowlers and all-rounders. As Bangalore already had the likes of Gayle, Kohli, and ABD in their squad, they needed someone to strengthen their bowling.

Even though Wiese failed with the ball in the IPL, he has been a decent performer in the PSL. Till now, he has picked 19 wickets in his career in 23 games. Adding on, he has an economy rate of 8.69 in the tournament. This enables Wiese to make it to this list.

3. Ben Dunk

Well, this year has been a bad one for Ben Dunk. Recently, he has received seven stitches just before the PSL. The wicketkeeper-batsman has been one of the prime performers in various T20 tournaments so far. But, he has failed to make a mark on the international stage and in the IPL.

Dunk was a part of the Mumbai Indians squad in 2014. Till now, he has played only 3 games in a single season. Well, a tally of three games is too little to judge a player, but the power-packed MI squad had a well-settled team, which meant Dunk had no place in the playing XI. In the IPL, he has scored just 40 runs with a strike rate of 114.29.

But the story has been somewhat different for Dunk in the PSL. In 22 games, he has scored 504 runs with an average of 33.60. Adding on, he has a humongous strike rate of 151.35 in the tournament. Apart from that, the highest score of 99 showcases his abilities with the bat.

2. Colin Munro

Colin Munro is an attacking top-order batsman who has scored 3 T20I centuries in his career. The stylish left-handed batsman is well known for his clean ball-striking abilities. In 65 T20I games, he has a strike rate of 156.44. This shows his consistency with the bat in the shortest format of the game.

However, Munro has failed in the IPL. In 13 games, he has scored just 177 runs with a strike rate of 125.53. Adding on, he has been underused by all the franchises he has played for. Munro was a part of Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, and the Kolkata Knight Riders.

But, the Kiwi has been a great asset for Islamabad United and Karachi Kings, the two teams he has played for in the PSL. With a strike rate of 140, he has shown that he is one of the best performers with the bat in T20 cricket. Adding on, he has scored 343 runs in 16 games so far, which enables him to make it to the list of highest run-scorers in PSL.

1. Tymal Mills

Tymal Mills made the headlines of various newspapers because of his success at the domestic level. He could generate sheer pace and bowl those deadly yorkers. Adding on, the fact that he could bowl consistently at the right spots made him a difficult bowler to face. But, the Englishman failed to succeed at the international as well as in the IPL level.

In the IPL, Mills was picked up by the Royal Challengers Bangalore. In 5 games, he managed to pick 5 wickets. But, he was left out of the squad for most of the time. Adding on, the franchise wanted him to bowl more economically, as he had an economy rate of 8.58. Later on, he found no bidders during the 2018 mega auctions.

Mills has played 22 PSL games so far. Till now, he has picked 28 wickets for his franchises. Apart from that, he has a healthy economy rate of 7.79 in the tournament. These efforts have enabled him to make it to the list of highest wicket-takers in the tournament.
