Virat Kohli currently holds the record for the most number of double centuries in Test cricket for India. He struck seven 200s in the Test cricket thus far, all coming in the span of 3 and half years. Kohli never scored a first-class double century prior to this spree of double tons. His highest first-class score remained 197 for nearly 8 years. Kohli scored 197 during the 2008-09 edition of the Nissar Trophy at the Feroz Shah Kotla. The Delhi team featured in this game as the Ranji Trophy champions of the 2007-08 edition.

They faced the Quaid-e-Azam champions SNGPL (Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited) who took a 132-run first-innings lead in this fixture. Delhi tried to bounce back as Virat smashed 197 from 274 balls with 30 boundaries. He shared a 385-run partnership with Aakash Chopra which is Delhi’s highest stand in FC cricket for the 2nd wicket. Chopra himself scored 182 from 315 balls but the title was won by the visitors as an outright result was not possible due to play being abandoned on the final day.

Kohli’s 197 remains as the highest individual score by an Indian team across the three editions of the Nissar Trophy. In fact, only Khurram Manzoor (for Karachi Urban vs Mumbai in 2006-07) recorded a highest score in this competition. The duo of Kohli and Chopra also registered the biggest 2nd wicket partnership for Delhi in List A cricket. They put on a 222-run stand in only 30.2 overs during a 300+ chase against Railways in the quarter-finals of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2008-09.
