Virat Kohli got a chance to make his India debut in interesting circumstances as he was made to open during the 2008 Sri Lanka ODI series. However, he had to wait for his 2nd chance in ODIs until the 2009 Champions Trophy. Virat’s batting performances during this period i.e. in the 2008-09 Indian domestic season played a key role in bringing him back to the scheme of things. Kohli stood out as the leading-run getting of the 2008-09 Vijay Hazare Trophy with 534 runs.

He amassed those 534 runs across seven innings at an impressive batting average of 89 with the help of a record number of four centuries. Virat Kohli’s four centuries in this tournament are the most number of hundreds scored by any player in a single edition of the tournament. A lot of players before and after Virat in 2008-09 did smash three hundreds apiece in the history of the Vijay Hazare Trophy but none of them got their 4th ton in the same tournament.

Kohli’s first ton was 102 from 113 balls against the Jammu & Kashmir where the Delhi team won by 112 runs. In the following match against Punjab, the Delhi batsman smashed an unbeaten 119 from only 110 balls by putting on an unbeaten 124-run stand with Rajat Bhatia for the 4th wicket. This was easily Kohli’s easiest ton of the tournament as Delhi were chasing only 203 which was tracked down in only 38.5 overs.

Virat’s highest score of the season was 124 which came in only 82 balls against the Haryana team with 9 fours and 7 sixes. Delhi finished with 364/6 on the board with help of Kohli’s ton while Haryana were bowled out for only 225. Kohli’s 4th and last ton of the season was 114 from 93 balls against Railways who posted 305/6. Kohli got out 82 runs away from a win with 19.2 overs still to be played. Delhi eventually reached the target but not before losing 8 wickets.
