India crashing out of the T20 World Cup 2021 was one of the most disappointing failures for the national men’s team in quite some time. However, the team has an opportunity to change that record by putting together a much more commendable performance in the upcoming T20 World Cup, which will start in October 2022 in Australia.
With a new head coach in Rahul Dravid and a new T20I skipper in Rohit Sharma, the plans for next year’s World Cup have already been set in motion. There are several new faces who could be tried while some stars might be seen getting sidelined. Nevertheless, it can be denied that the team management needs to groom players for now.
5 Indian players who can be prepared for the next T20 World Cup
1. Venkatesh Iyer
The Madhya Pradesh all-rounder has been in the news ever since he turned up for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the second leg of the Indian Premier League 2021. In the ten matches that he played in the second leg, he smashed 370 runs with the bat at an average of 41.11 and a strike rate of 128.47.
What was also really impressive about him was his all-round talent. Even though KKR didn’t use him much as a bowler, in a couple of games, he showcased why he could be a good seam-bowling option going forward. In fact, after the IPL, he appeared for his domestic side in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy 2021 and delivered with the bat and the ball.
He made 155 runs with a strike rate of 141 while taking five wickets at an average of 17.40 and an economy of 5.80. His performances earned him a call-up in the squad for the T20I series against New Zealand. Iyer might also make his debut, given how the balance for the squad playing in that series is. Considering how there is so much uncertainty over Hardik Pandya’s bowling, Iyer can be groomed as a replacement or a backup.
