Until December 2007, a total of nine 50-over World Cup editions took place. However, none of them was won by the teams which hosted the tournament final. Sri Lanka came close in 1996 when they were one of the three host nations of the tournament. They won the final against Australia during the game played in Lahore. In fact, England (in 1979) were the only team to play a CWC final at home till then.

However, from 2011, the fortunes of the home sides changed dramatically. In all the three editions of the World Cup played in these 12 years have been won by the host nations. India defeated Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in the 2011 edition to bag their first CWC title in 28 years. Australia replicated this feat in 2015 CWC by defeating New Zealand in Melbourne.

It was the 5th time that the Aussies lifted the World Cup; three more times than any other nation. It was also Australia’s 4th time in five editions. Later in 2019, the England team finally brought an end to their wait to win an ODI World Cup. Hosting the CWC for the first time in 20 years, England edged past New Zealand in the Lord’s final by virtue of hitting more boundaries as the Super over also ended in a Tie.
