The year 2016 saw a beautiful film on the life of legendary Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni hit the silver screen directed by Neeraj Pandey; the biopic received applaud worldwide. Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput played the role of the former Indian skipper and pulled it off quite acutely. Though the film was named MS Dhoni – The Untold Story, some of the secrets from the life of the wicketkeeper-batsman still remained hidden from the outer world.

Keshav Banerjee, the sports coach of Jawahar Vidya Mandir school in Ranchi, which is the place of Dhoni’s matriculation, decided to throw some light on those mysteries. Banerjee was in Kolkata to be a part of the opening ceremony of the Yo Cup, an under 14 tournament that is organized by the Mainland-Sambaran Cricket Academy. The tournament is scheduled to get underway on Wednesday.

He tenderly remembered MS Dhoni’s stories as a schoolboy and shared them with the Telegraph. The once mentor of the World Cup winning skipper said, “Once, we were playing in an inter-school tournament and we lost a match. I was angry with the boys and asked the senior players in the team to not board the school bus on the way back from the match… I told them to walk back to the school. Dhoni was in that group and never for once did he complain,”

The incident clearly gives us an idea of the player’s ability to accept a low in his career and bounce back from it. Dhoni has always been a personality who never complained but learned from his experiences. “Even in the class, he was a quiet boy. He spoke only as much as he was asked,” said Banerjee.

Taking up another incident from the vault, Banerjee said: “On another occasion, the school team was ready to leave for a match when we found that Dhoni was yet to board the bus. He was attending a class… I had to go to the class and request the teacher to excuse him. She did…”

“And when he was about to leave the class, the teacher light-heartedly asked one of his classmates to take Dhoni’s autograph. Dhoni didn’t get any attention then, but in a few years he was signing many.” Banerjee added.
