Afghanistan cricket team has its practice sessions in Noida. They also play their matches at Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex in Greater Noida. The under-19 team is also set to take their base to India. The qualifiers for the U19 World Cup 2018 is scheduled to be held in Singapore and the Afghan team wants to cover up all bases to ensure they make it through.

The facilities for Cricket in India are one of the best in the world. Afghanistan is a close ally politically, diplomatically and as a cricketing nation. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has time and again aided them financially as well as with support at the ICC. To train for the Junior World Cup qualifiers they have also chosen a city which offers similar conditions to Singapore.

Chennai – the chosen city

Chennai is where the Afghanistan under-19 team will set their camp. They are going to use the world class facilities of CS-Whatmore Centre at Sri Ramchandra Medical College (SRMC) campus. The former Tamil Nadu coach Sanjay spoke about it to the PTI.

He emphasised the fact that the conditions in Chennai are humid which matches the weather in Singapore where the actual qualifiers are to be played. Sanjay also pronounced the world class facilities the sports complex offers.

“The Afghan board chose Chennai, specifically CSS-Whatmore Centre because of the quality of facilities available here and also because the conditions here would be similar to those in Singapore, where the WC qualifiers are to be held,” he said.

Sanjay went on to reveal that the young guns of Afghanistan will play some practice matches here and will also have net sessions. Along with that, they will play some second division local teams and the combined XIs. It will be quite a test for the young Afghans.

“The Afghanistan players will have net sessions and centre-wicket practice and also play practice matches during their stay here,” Sanjay revealed.
