After the West Indies failed to qualify for the 2019 World Cup, they are set to play the qualifier to get an entry in the tournament. Their Test performance has been dipping almost every game. In a bid to improve their performances, West Indies Cricket Board has appointed former South Africa bowler Alfonso Thomas as their bowling coach.

Although the bowler didn’t get his chances for Proteas during his career as he could only represent them in only 1 T20 internationals but he performed exceptionally well on the domestic scenes where he represented Somerset. He led the side in 50-over format in the county championship in England.

The T20 specialist bowler got his opportunities in T20 leagues around the world where he played in the tournaments like Indian Premier League, Big Bash League, and Bangladesh Premier League. The 43-year-old will be helping the side in the World Cup qualifier as West Indies would try to get themselves in the tournament which is set to occur in 2019.

West Indies are one of the very strong but inconsistent sides in the 20-over format but their form in the 50-over cricket has been very ordinary in the past which didn’t help their causes and now they need to play the qualifiers to enter the championship.

New appointments keeping qualifier in mind

The Windies Cricket Board has also roped in former leg-spinner Rawl Lewis who was part of their World T20 victory in India in 2016. The then operations manager is set to perform the role of a team manager this time around.

West Indies start batter Chris Gayle has been named in the squad that will play the qualifier in Zimbwabe next month while likes of Carlos Braithwaite and Shai Hope will have to help the side in crunch situations of the qualifier. Jason Holder will be captaining the side.

Alfonso and Lewis will work along with head coach Stuart Law to help and revive the fortune of the Wes Indies cricket with their experiences.
