Bangladesh cricket recently recovered from a tumultuous phase after the players ended their strike of not playing the sport. It was after the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) accepted their demands. Shakib Al Hasan was mostly in charge from the players’ side and was supported by senior players. After the hustle and bustle, the all-rounder has found himself into another trouble.
The Jessore-born is set to be slapped with a show-cause notice by the BCB following his signing with Grameenphone. The local telecom giants announced on October 22 that Shakib will be their brand ambassador. As per the BCB’s agreement, a cricketer under national contract cannot join a telecom company. Earlier, the board lost TK 90 crores in 3 years while being associated with Robi.
“He cannot make this agreement [with a telecom company] and why he cannot make this agreement is clearly stated in our contract paper,” BCB chief Nazmul Hasan Papon was quoted as saying in Bengali Daily Kalerkantho on Saturday, October 26
“Robi [Telecom] was our title sponsor and Grameenphone did not bid and instead they grabbed few cricketers by paying them TK One or Two Crores. What happened in the end? The board lost TK 90 Crores in three years,” Papon added.
We cannot spare anyone in this regard: BCB
Shakib inked the deal a day after the strike was called off, thereby violating the terms and conditions of the board. Papon, who has been in the thick of things surrounding all the chaos going around in Bangladesh cricket, didn’t mince any words in saying that no one will be spared in the deal signing.
The BCB is set to take a legal action, sending a letter to Shakib and asking him to give a proper explanation for joining Grameenphone. The board will also be sending the telecom company a legal notice, asking for compensation.
“We are going into legal action. We cannot spare anyone in this regard. We will ask for compensation. We will seek compensation from the company as well as from the player. I heard about it [on October 23] and asked to send legal notice to Grameenphone to claim compensation.
I asked to send a letter to Shakib for explanation. We must give him a chance to show he didn’t break the rule. To us it seemed that it was something like ‘give a damn to the board’ and if that is the case we will take tough action,” the BCB chief stated.
Bangladesh’s next cricketing assignment is the tour of India, starting Sunday, November 3 with the T20I series. There will also be a couple of Tests in Indore and Kolkata.
