The Indian captain Virat Kohli was scheduled to travel to England during the next month in June for his first ever county stint with popular English county club Surrey. The premier Indian batsman took the big decision to improve his record in the country and to prepare well before the official tour to England where team India will be playing 3 T20Is, 3 ODIs and 5 Tests. However, as per reports going around earlier in the day, Kohli will not be available for his debut county stint as he is suffering a neck injury.

BCCI’s statement

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has released an official statement, that the Indian captain will not be playing county cricket for Surrey due to his recent injury. As per the statement, Kohli will be appearing for a fitness test on June 15, where the management will be doing the final assessment regarding the future availability of the Indian captain. In the meanwhile before the fitness test next month, the Indian batsman will be doing his normal rehabilitation training.

Kohli will be missing the five one-day domestic matches for Surrey and also the four-day first-class fixtures, which all were mentioned his deal with the English club. He has already not been named in the squad announced earlier for the one-off Test match against Afghanistan, starting from June 14 in Bengaluru.

Too much of workload

The Indian captain has played non-stop cricket over the last 12 months and that has resulted with a neck injury, and the problem was diagnosed by one of the top orthopaedic surgeons in the country, who practices at a Khar hospital. The doctors told Kohli that there has been some damage to the spinal nerves, and there was a chance he may have to miss some part of the England tour, beginning July, if the injury worsened. The doctors, however, were certain that Kohli didn’t need surgery at this stage.

“Kohli was not to feature in the historic maiden Test match against Afghanistan next month, and now with this injury, his county stint will not take off either,” said a BCCI official who knew about the development.
