The Day 2 of the ongoing IPL 2022 mega auction saw a few players getting new teams. While the 2016 champions Sunrisers Hyderabad bought Proteas batter Aiden Markram for INR 2.6 crore, senior India batter Ajinkya Rahane went to two-time winners Kolkata Knight Riders for INR 1 crore. However, there were some surprises as well as a few seasoned overseas players went unsold and that included the Australian limited-overs skipper Aaron Finch.

As the Australian Test specialist, Marnus Labuschagne along with the likes of the England duo of white-ball captain Eoin Morgan and Dawid Malan went unsold on the second day, Finch’s case was the most surprising one of them all given the fact that he had led Australia to their maiden ICC T20 World Cup triumph in the UAE last year. When the opener’s name had popped up, none of the franchises showed any interest in buying him.
Aaron Finch: The leader behind Australia’s successful T20 World Cup 2021 campaign
Aaron Finch’s base price was INR 1.5 crore coming into the IPL 2022 mega auction but he did not make it to any team at that price. He did not have the best of time during the T20 World Cup 2021 but that does not take anything away from his accomplishments in the shortest format of the game.
The 35-year-old became only the sixth batter in the world to reach the milestone of 10,000 T20 runs as he achieved the feat during a Big Bash League (BBL) 2021-22. In fact, the T20 World Cup-winning skipper is also the fifth-highest scorer in T20Is, having amassed 2616 runs in 84 appearances with his highest individual score being 172.
The white-ball specialist is just behind senior New Zealand batter Martin Guptill (3,299), batting megastar Virat Kohli (3,227), India’s limited-overs skipper Rohit Sharma (3,197), and Pakistan skipper Babar Azam (2,620) respectively.
Finch has so far represented eight teams in the IPL including the likes of the inaugural edition winners Rajasthan Royals, Delhi, the now-defunct teams Pune Warriors India and Gujarat Lions, 2016 winners Sunrisers Hyderabad, five-time champions Mumbai Indians, 2014 finalists Punjab Kings, and three-time finalists Royal Challengers Bangalore respectively between 2010 to 2020.
